Continuing Education Units

CEUs

We are pleased to be able to offer CEUs (continuing education units) to all workshop participants.

Increasingly, business, industry, and professional associations are requiring their constituents to return to school to maintain a high level of currency in their field. The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a system that documents participation in non-credit courses.

A Uniform Unit for the Measurement of Non-Credit Continuing Education Programs, the CEU is granted for recognition of the efforts of individuals who participate in activities that otherwise do not generate college credits.

CEU CREDIT

In accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Council on Continuing Education Units, as well as The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, individual CEU's are computed on the basis of one unit for each ten contact hours of participation in:

  • Conferences,
  • Workshops,
  • Seminars,
  • Institutes,
  • Short Courses,
  • or Other special activities

Units are recorded to one decimal point. Thus a program meeting for a total of 14 hours would carry 1.4 CEU's.

One hour of continuing education=one contact hour

See the table below for typical conversion from other continuing education activities to CEUs:

Unit type awarded

Contact Hours

One continuing education unit (CEU) 10
One college quarter hour 30
One college semester hour 45

PROGRAM CRITERIA

To qualify for awarding CEU's, according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the program must meet the following criteria:

  1. The non-credit activity is planned in response to an assessment of educational need for a specific target population;
  2. There is a statement of objectives and rationale;
  3. Content is selected and is organized in a sequential manner;
  4. The activity is of an instructional nature and is sponsored or approved by an academic or administrative unit of the institution best qualified to affect the resource personnel utilized;
  5. Provision is made for registration for individual participants;
  6. Appropriate evaluation procedures are utilized and criteria are established for awarding CEU's to individual students prior to the beginning of the activity. This may include the evaluation of student performance, instructional procedures and course effectiveness.

The number of units will be determined by the number of contact hours spent in a formal learning environment. This does not preclude the consideration of field trips, laboratory assignments, and other appropriately related experiences.

The Bottom Line

So how many CEUs will I get if I attend this workshop?

If the workshop meets for one day, and we are actively involved in educational activities for ten hours that day, 1.0 CEU will be granted.

If the workshop meets for several days, and we are actively involved in educational activities for thirty six hours, 3.6 CEUs will be granted, for example.

In the case of a workshop that extends to half of a month or more, CEUs can be as high as 12 or more units.

Note:

  1. Please let us know when you register for the workshop if you will need a CEU certificate upon completion of the workshop.
  2. We provide CEU certification at no additional cost to our worshop participants.
